F-15 vs MiG-29

The MiG-29, the first of the new Russian air-superiority fighters to enter service, is powered by two Klimov RD-33 two-spool, low-bypass turbofan engines which, at the aircraft’s normal take-off weight of 15 tonnes, give a thrust-to-weight ratio of 1.1.

Design emphasis from the start was on very high manoeuvrability and the ability to destroy targets at distances of between 660ft (200m) and 32nm (60km). Forty per cent of the MiG-29′s lift is provided by its lift-generating centre fuselage, and the aircraft is able to achieve angles of attack at least 70 per cent higher than earlier fighters.

The MiG-29 has an RP-29 pulse-Doppler radar capable of detecting targets at around 62 miles (100km) against a background of ground clutter. Fire-control and mission computers link the radar with a laser rangefinder and infrared search/track sensor, in conjunction with a helmet-mounted target designator.

The Fulcrum’s radar can track ten targets simultaneously, and the system allows the aircarft to approach and engage targets without emitting detectable radar or radio signals. The MiG-29′s primary armament is the AA-10A Alamo, the equivalent of the American AIM-7 Sparrow, with the AA-8 Aphid infrared AAM as the close-range weapon. A 30mm gun, with 150 rounds, is fitted in the port wing-root leading-edge extension.
