MiG-21 vs Tejas

The first MiG-21s actually had better visibility than later versions with the high spine like the MiG-21R and MiG-21bis. New avionics for the ‘bis’ version included RSBN navigation equipment and an instrument approach system. The ‘bis’, and other MiG-21 models after the PPM variant, had a two-piece canopy hinging to starboard and a fixed windscreen.

Like the MiG-21R, the ‘bis’ version had increased fuel capacity in the dorsal spine. This was something of a mixed blessing in some variants as it affected stability.

The MiG-21bis was filled with an SPO-3 radar-warning receiver. The tailfin was topped by an aerial in a dielectric fairing. The fin chord was increased after the first MiG-21 versions to increase stability.

Some of the first MiG-21 variants were not fitted with a gun, but when it was realised how unreliable early missiles were, the gun was reinstated. India was one of the first customers to demand this.

The standard Soviet short-range air-to-air missile was the K-13 (NATO codename Atoll). This MiG-21 carries the improved ‘Advanced Atoll’ in both infra-red and radar-homing versions.

For short take-offs from rough strips at high all-up weights, two solid rocket boosters could be fitted under the fuselage of the MiG-21bis. These produced 450,000 W of power for several seconds.
